6-Striped Sparkle Ridged Spiral Kumihimo Necklace

– with Cheryl Focht

Create this sparking Ridged Spiral braid as a focal piece with eight element Kongoh Gumi straps to make this dramatic necklace. The necklace uses two different braids, the ever versatile Japanese kumihimo Kongoh Gumi using eight cords, and then morphs into a 12-cord ridged spiral braid with six stripes for the center focal point. A fully illustrated color tutorial will walk you through the ins-and-outs of making this colorful necklace. Various colorways will be available.

Students will learn  how to prepare the disk for braiding an eight element (cord) Kongo Gumi braid with a core to be used for the 12-element ridged spiral focal point and then return to an eight element Kongo Gumi braid; how to calculate and prepare the cord and why weights are important; how to number your bobbins for cord management and convenience in loading beads. Students will learn the secret to specifically putting their stripes in the order they wish and seamlessly go from eight cords to 12 and back again; how to lock beads in place at the point of braid; how to look for the point of braid; finishing techniques including binding, cutting, gluing, and attaching crimp end caps with magnetic closures.
