About AKS

Makiko Tada’s Historical Braid Reconstruction.

The American Kumihimo Society (AKS) was formed in January of 2016 as a resource for the braiding community in the Americas. While our focus is on Kumihimo, a Japanese style of braiding, we will provide support and education resources to promote and nurture the public understanding of braiding from many cultures

The art of braiding encompasses many different media, from its origins in fiber to the more recent use of beads, wire, and other materials in creating unique braids that have made their way into jewelry, art installations, clothing, and more.

Our Goals

The AKS goals are ambitious, and we are so grateful for the help and support of the braiding community that has already helped make many of these a reality:

  1. Establish a comprehensive AKS website featuring:
    • Blog articles featuring info on all aspects of braiding
    • Calendar of events – local braiding classes, shows, etc.
    • Braiding Dictionary – terminology used in braiding
    • Resource page – suppliers, schools, instructors, etc.
    • A listing of local study groups all around the US where braiders of all levels meet to braid and socialize!
  2.  Hold an AKS Gathering conference as an annual major braiding educational event.
  3. Produce a quarterly newsletter and an annual journal.

We hope that you’ll consider becoming a member of this group! We can’t do it alone.

Thank you for your interest in helping The American Kumihimo Society further their goal of providing knowledge and resources to  America’s Braiding Community! One of our goals is to provide educational opportunities to the braiding community to foster the development of a deeper understanding of braiding terms and techniques, to provide resources to improve existing skills and develop new ones, with the ultimate goal of a stronger, more robust, community.

Whether is the annual AKS Gathering or weekly get-togethers with a local group, we encourage you to use our events calendar to find braiding events near you and events that will enhance your kumihimo knowledge.

One of the best ways to learn and grow is with others. It’s part of our mission to provide you resources that will help you connect with your fellow kumistas. Check out our networking tools, events calendar, local group listings, and, of course, classes
