This photo shows the the Point of Braiding (POB) on the takadai. I’m all ready to go, EXCEPT that since I’m using 53 tama, the five 6-pin koma I have on each arm don’t provide enough spaces to be able to braid with that many tama. SO, I just ordered 9-pin koma. Since they won’t arrive before the Challenge deadline, this braid won’t be done in…[Read more]

As I am a very new takadai braider, I decided to use the takadai to braid my AKS Black & White Challenge Braid. I recently purchased a set of 7 graduated colors (Black to White) 10/2 mercerized cotton from Lunatic Fringe Yarns, which I’m going to use for this braid. So far, I have warped the threads.
As soon as I finish braiding what’s currently…[Read more]

Here’s my transitions braid, done in a Japanese purple precut metallic. I had not previously done the Nishiki Yatsu braid before – I really like the way it looks. I also appreciated the tip about putting a piece of tape on one of the marudai legs, 5 – 6 inches below the mirror with the idea that you unroll your tama to that length and braid…[Read more]

I have been making my sample braid with polyurethane coated cord. It’s taken a little getting used to as it’s quite sticky/grabby. In fact, when advance the braid to adjust the point of braiding, one the koma popped out of place, in part because of the tackiness of the cord. I did rearrange the koma, so part of the problem may also have been a…[Read more]

Randy – I hope these photos help. They are the back of baby takadai. It’s a little hard to see because my yarn is white, but there is a lark’s head knot around the knot at the top of the photo (which is all the fibers tied together). The lark’s head knot is made from the cord that was thread thru the hole in the part that turns at the bottom. As…[Read more]

It would be helpful it Giovanna would talk about finishing these braids, particularly if one is trying to make a piece of jewelry.

This Inside Out Edo Yatsu Braid was made without a core stand using the technique that Makiko Tada called Covered Edo Yatsu. The seed beads are size 11 with randomly placed malachite chips. The Malachite chips were on 4 of the cords and only seed beads on 4 of the cords.

This is the Inside Out Edo Yatsu Braid that I made during the Bead & Button Show 2016 Master Class. This one was created with a core stand.

Since I was using the same silk set-up as F-Fret & Flowers to conserve time and materials, these samples are a bit shorter than would maybe be ideal. I think it’s interesting how the Edo-Yatsu x 3 (Yatsu Oimatsu) just makes a thicker spiral stripe than Edo-Yatsu x 1.

As Roslie suggested, I chose to map out the moves on a piece of paper. It showed how many repetitions of the sequence is needed to return to the original layout for each braid. Unlike for Spirals and Stripes, for F-Fret to Flowers there didn’t seem to be a layout anywhere in the sequences that lined up for the alternate braid (S-Slant to Z-Slant).…[Read more]
Hi Jane … For Braid 20 … the Z-spiral layout —do two clockwise and two counterclockwise steps, followed by 3 clockwise and 2 counterclockwise, you will isolate a flower with arrows either side. Keep repeating over and over … I tried switching colors to every other one, but am not sure I was successful in doing so. I’ll post what I did.

Jane, what a beautiful display of shades of white, grey and black. From someone who has no knowledge of takadai – THIS IS EXCITING! I look forward to the finished product even if it is after the Challenge closes.
