Braids Beads & Beyond is new study group that is part of the Tucson Handweavers and Spinners Guild. Eventual membership in the guild is necessary, but, newcomers wanting to try it out are welcome until they decide. This month, we will take a break from working through Makiko Tada's Comprehensive Treatise of Braids I: Marudai Braids, and we will be doing a study of counterweight in braiding, led by Carolyn Haushalter. Because we will all set up for this braiding project together, we will meet from 1:30 to 5:30. For materials you will need something soft in bundles or the weight change won’t show as effectively. All level of braiders are welcome. Our group meets monthly to study a specific braid structure. The group environment allows for an in-depth exploration into the many design possibilities. These can include color placement, braiding materials, thick and thin warps, etc. Introduction to marudai instruction is available with advance notice (to insure that marudai equipment is available). We will be exploring the use of multi-strand fibers, specifically Japanese Metallic Fibers. After we prepare the fibers and load them on the tama, you will braid the 8 mama of your choice.
