THE 2023 IN PERSON GATHERING

Your Chance to See Old Friends, Make New Friends and Learn Additional Skills

August 24th – 27th, 2023 at the San Francisco Hyatt Regency Airport Hotel

General Information:

Three days of classes offer a variety of topics for our wide range of braiders: Beginners, Intermediate, and Advanced.

Equipment is varied and includes Disc, Square Plate, Octoplate, Marudai and Takadai

Braiding materials run the gamut from fiber to beads to wire and more.

Other activities include Vendor Marketplace, The Lanyard Challenge, Origami with Carol, and The Meet the Teacher Reception

All classes are from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm with the provided lunch from 12:30 pm to 2:00 pm.

Thursday, August 24th

  • Check In for The 2023 In Person Gathering
    • From 2 pm to 8 pm
  • Market Place
    • The In Person Gathering instructors and a number of vendors will have items for sale.
    • From 2 pm to 8 pm

Friday, August 25th

  • Morning Session featuring Giovanna Imperia welcoming the attendees followed by a presentation by Makiko Tada. Also the Lanyard Challenge winners will be announced by Kim Tamarin
    • More to follow on the Lanyard Challenge, here on the website and by email.
    • From 8:00 am to 9:15 am
  • Meet the Teachers Reception (be sure to get your ticket when you register for your classes)
    • The Meet the Teachers will have appetizers and beverages provided. Tickets for the Meet the Teachers are $10.00. At 6:30 there will be the drawing for the Raffle, always fun. Raffle tickets are $1.00 and will be sold until 5 pm on Friday.

Saturday, August 26th

  • Morning Session featuring presentation by Jacqui Carey
    • From 8:15 am to 9:15 am
  • Origami with Carol Benner
    • The Japanese Origami Crane is a worldwide symbol of peace and hope. And, the legend goes that folding 1000 cranes will make a wish come true. Children throughout the world send thousands of strung cranes to the Peace Park in Hiroshima. Join Carol to learn in making a crane and make your own wish come true. Carol will have all of the supplies.

Sunday, August 27th

  • Morning Session – American Kumihimo Society Annual Meeting
    • From 8:15 am to 9:15 am

Gathering Costs, The Susan Basch Memorial Scholarship and Registration:

Gathering Costs:

The fee for the 2023 In Person Gathering is $800. Items covered by this fee include three full days of classes and lunch on each class day. The Meet the Teacher Reception ticket is $10 and is available for purchase when you register.

The Susan Basch Memorial Scholarship Fund:

Scholarships will be awarded to two AKS Founding and Supporting members in good standing. The fund will pay for registration (3 days of classes*) with an additional $1,000 to be used for travel and other expenses. More information

*Kit fees and supplies not included

Registration:

FOR FOUNDING AND SUPPORTING MEMBERS registration for the In Person Gathering is scheduled to open at noon eastern on Saturday, March 11th. For non-members registration will open at noon eastern on Saturday, March 25th.

Class sizes are limited, therefore, if you have particular classes you would like to attend REGISTER EARLY. Also don’t forget to purchase your Meet the Teacher Reception ticket.

Transportation from the Hyatt: 

  • Complimentary shuttle runs every 15 minutes to and from SFO Airport. Hotel shuttles are on the departure level of the airport and located in the middle isle.
  • Free trolley to downtown Burlingame
  • Electric bikes available

Restaurant Information: 

  • The Hyatt has three on site restaurants.
  • AKS will provide a list of close by restaurants upon check in
