Hide and Seek on a Disk with Shirley Berlin

  • Students will learn:
    • Three different ways to braid around core yarns, allowing colors to come and go.
    • Laramie braid, a ridged spiral. You will carry the core threads tucked under your fingers and they travel around that way as you braid.
This braid can also be worked with wire.
    • Kongo gumi, the “left up, right down” braid. The core threads rest on the top of the disc and are shifted with each move.
    • Combination braid: Kongo plus square. Braid the core as you go.

Shirley will demonstrate on a disc but a marudai can be used for the Kongo and Combination braids.
The foam disc is preferable for the Laramie braid.

Experience Required:

This is a project for everyone – beginner to advanced braiders.

Description

Instructor – Shirley Berlin

Shirley loves to teach kumihimo and other narrow wares workshops. She is particularly interested in basic kumihimo and its myriad variations: texture, thick and thin, distortion, adding bumps or beads, beginnings and endings. With time, she has come to appreciate that the foam disc has more possibilities than she first thought.

Shirley has been braiding since the 1980’s and is a founding member of both AKS and the Braid Society. As BerlinBraids, she and Peter make marudai and tama in Canada. She can answer the question “That’s nice, dear, but what do you do with it?”
