My Sweet Sarah Kumihimo and Embellished Netting Choker

– with Cheryl Focht

Create this stunning choker that sparkles like rose gold with diamonds. The choker is made from a mixed media blend of one of the more versatile Japanese kumihimo braids, Kongoh Gumi, and flat or vertical netting. Separately, both are fun and easy, but together create a dazzling necklace that looks deceptively complex as though you spent hours making it. Kits will also be available in white, black, and turquoise.

Students will learn how to prepare the disk for braiding a Kongo Gumi braid with rows of SuperDuo beads along the bottom. Special attention will be given to the setup of the disk and attachment of the counterweight. Students will learn how to calculate and prepare the cord, why weights are important and how to manage the cords; learn how to lock beads in place at the point of braid; how to look for the point of braid; finishing techniques including binding, cutting, gluing, and attaching crimp end caps. A fully illustrated seven page tutorial with 25 plus photos and color illustrations will walk students through kumihimo as well as the embellished netting that will then be added to the bottom of the choker. Each step is shown in detail, including the direction the needle and cords will run. Sizing will be taught along with adding extender chains to accommodate varying size choker lengths.
