General Information:

NEW FORMAT THIS YEAR! Four days of classes with both 6-hour and 3-hour formats offering a variety of topics and techniques for our wide range of braiders: Beginners, Intermediate, and Advanced.

Braiding techniques will be taught on Disc, Square Plate, Octoplate and Marudai and will be fiber-only, beaded braids to wire and more.

Other activities include social gatherings, Vendor Marketplace, the Lanyard Challenge, free demos, shopping at the Mall of America (Minnesota has ZERO sales tax on clothing!!) and more!

Thursday classes:  2:00pm to 5:00pm
Friday/Saturday classes 9:30 am to 5:30 pm — Lunch will be provided from 12:30 to 2:30
Sunday classes 8:30 am to 11:30

The Annual AKS Meeting will be presented during lunch on Saturday Sept. 14, 2024.

  • 11 am to 5 pm — Submit your entry for the Lanyard Challenge

Friday, September 13th, 2024:

  • 8:00 am to 9:15 am — Morning Session featuring Giovanna Imperia welcoming the attendees followed by a presentation.
    • Lanyard Challenge winners will be announced by our hosts Katherine Buenger and Kristen MacDowell.

  • 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm — Market Place
    • The Gathering 2024 instructors and a number of vendors will have kits, tutorials, supplies and tools for sale.
    • FREE Demos
      • Join Makiko Tada, the inventor of the Octoplate, for a free demo on this amazing tool and see how it can open a world of options for your braiding. 
      • The Japanese Origami Crane is a worldwide symbol of peace and hope. Legend goes that folding 1000 cranes will make a wish come true. Children throughout the world send thousands of strung cranes to the Peace Park in Hiroshima. Join Carol to learn in making a crane and make your own wish come true. Carol will have all of the supplies.
      • Are you curious about using a bead spinner? Come try one out! We will have both traditional and battery-powered versions with hands-on instruction. 

Saturday, September 14th 2024:

  • 8:15 am to 9:15 am — Morning Session presentation. 
  • American Kumihimo Society Annual Meeting will be held during lunch

Sunday, September 15th   

  • Noon till whenever: Après Gathering Soiree — Casual meetup to finish projects, start new ones, show-and-tell or simply visit with friends and make some new ones. 

Gathering Costs, Scholarship and Registration:

Gathering Costs:

The fee for the AKS Gathering 2024 is $575. This fee includes four days of classes and lunch on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.


Two Scholarships will be awarded to AKS Founding and Supporting members in good standing. The fund will pay for registration (4 days of classes*) plus an additional $500 to be used for travel and other expenses.

FOR FOUNDING AND SUPPORTING MEMBERS registration for the AKS Gathering 2024 is scheduled to open at noon eastern on Saturday, March 30th, 2024.
For non-members, registration will open at noon eastern on Saturday, April 6th, 2024.
