Description

Anda Gumi means “Easy to Braid” and is one of the simplest of braids to master. It is a basic over/under arrangement of threads and creates a strong flat braid. The recent invention of the Square Plate allows braiders to assemble an Anda Gumi or plain weave braid without using a takadai. A simple Anda Gumi variation – simply reversing the order of braiding at regular intervals — allows the braider to create a Zig Zag braid. Other tweaks or “hacks” will allow the braider to create other designs such as curling the zig zag tip to make a curly zig zag braid.

In this class, students will learn:

  1. Fundamentals of Anda Gumi including terminology,
  2. Setup of threads on the Square Plate and Anda Gumi moves,
  3. Zig Zag variation and a simple “hack” to make a curly zig zag tip, and
  4. Adding threads to the setup as needed.

The instructor will also demonstrate  how to widen or narrow parts of the Zigzag Braid and how to adjust the length of the Zig Zag point.

Student will be provided with a pattern and instructions to make lovely Zig Zag necklace or arm cuff with soft curly points.

Instructor – Carol Benner

Carol Benner has been braiding for a little more than 10 years. Because of a visual disability, she particularly likes braiding on the square and octo plates and exploring creative options on the foam disks.  “Its simply easier to see than the marudai.”  She enjoys several other crafts including French Beaded Flowers, Knitting, Crochet and Origami.
