Description

Instructor – Makiko Tada

Japan’s Makiko Tada is largely responsible for the growing international interest in the art of Kumihimo braiding. She creates designs from both traditional patterns and from her own original designs and is an expert on the long history of kumihimo.  After restoring ancient national treasure braids from the Kyoto National Museum, she dedicated them to Kasuga Taisha Shrine and Hayatama Shrine.

Makiko Tada conducts research and lectures in Europe, North and South America, Asia, and Australia and authored the seven-volume “Comprehensive Treatise of Braids”.  While completing her Doctorate of Engineering at Kyoto Institute of Technology she received funding from the Japanese government to invent a new braiding machine for composite materials.  This machine will be vital for making components for the construction and aerospace industries.

Dr. Makiko Tada’s 40 years of research, artistry, authorship, and invention assure the art of Kumihimo braiding will touch and enrich many lives across the world.

Equipment:

This versatile braid can be easily made on either the round disk or marudai.

Disk: Round disk, any size will work, regular density and 32 slits is recommended for all braids. The need to use plastic bobbins will depend on the type of fiber being used. For many fibers it may be easier to work without plastic bobbins.
Marudai: Weighted tama; 16, 20, or 24. tama leaders are needed for precut fibers such as Japanese silk and metallic.
Materials:
A wide range of fibers were successfully used to test this braid. We do not recommend thick fiber such as satin cord or rattail as it is difficult to tighten the tension successfully. The testers recommend multi-strand fibers such as Japanese silk or metallic. An inexpensive option is to use yarn or multiple thin threads for each warp. A list of tested fibers are listed below.
Number of threads per warp:
Japanese silk* – 1 bundle of 16 tama weight or two bundles of 24 tama weight
Japanese metallic* – 2 bundles of 24 tama weight
CLon, SLon or Amiet – 1 to 3 threads per warp
*Japanese Silk and Metallic can be folded at the 1/3 point to make a necklace. This folding method will provide 1/3 of the fiber to be left over and used for another project. Or, fold in half to make a necklace and a bracelet.

Beads: Many sizes and shapes of beads can work with this braid. The sample braids use 4 – 5mm round beads. Beads will be worked on beading thread or a similar product.

Skill Level/Prerequisites:

This project is appropriate for braiders who have some experience braiding on a square plate, disk or marudai.
